INTRODUCTION:
Would you like to do an art course in oil painting, acrylic painting ceramics and printmaking?
Are you interested in exploring and experimenting with art media?
Does the idea of working ‘hands on’ in your own studio space in a strongly creative college appeal to you?
Are you working towards a creative career in fine art?
If you want to study art this well-established Fine Art course in Cork will give you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge and develop your skills in fine art painting, sculpture, drawing and design.
We also support students to prepare a portfolio and how they may go about setting themselves up in the art world in the future.
We put our student’s creative learning and development at the centre of our art courses.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
- QQI Level 5 Award in Art, Craft and or Design or in a related area is required.
- For mature applicants appropriate experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
- All applicants are interviewed. A portfolio is not required but applicants will be asked to show five examples of their own creative work.
DURATION:
This is a one-year full-time course.
PORTFOLIO PREPARATION:
There is a strong focus on portfolio preparation with one to one guidance for those applying to Art & Design Colleges including the Crawford College, Limerick school of art and design, National college of art and design and IADT with very high success rates.
COURSE FEATURES:

- Specialist Staff – the staff are very experience teachers who teach their own specialisms.
- Access to the colleges Information Resource Centre / Library with an extensive collection of art books and publications and ample computers with broadband.
- Trips to galleries and other course related trips.
- Douglas Street Campus is centrally located in Cork city within walking distance to galleries, art supplies shops and the bus and train station.
- There are a large range of other art, design, craft and media courses on campus.

Creative Application Ceramics - 6N3445
Exploring the creative possibilities of ceramics.
Combined Materials - 6N3587
Mixed media and the use of ‘non-traditional’ materials to enhance the student’s creativity and their appreciation of the visual and material world.
Communications - 6N1950
Exploring personal and professional communication.
Drawing - 6N3569
Deepening an understanding of drawing including sketchbook work, life drawing with models and experimental drawing.
Art History & Appreciation - 6N3450
Art history and appreciation of art and design, provides an insight into some important art theories.
Painting - 6N3452
Exploring areas such as the human form, the environment and non-objective painting in oils and acrylic paints.
Work Experience - 6N1946
Opportunities to explore career paths in art and design.
Printmaking - 6N3568
The creation of artworks using printing techniques.
Sculpture - 6N3570
Equipping the student with the knowledge and skill to generate 3D fine art sculpture using a variety of media.
WORK PLACEMENT / EXPERIENCE:
Participants will be required to undertake an minimum of 60 hours of work placement in a relevant activity. The College will assist participants in identifying suitable placements.
EDUCATION PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES:
There is a strong focus on portfolio preparation with one to one guidance for those applying to Art & Design Colleges including the MTU/Crawford College of Art and Design, TUS/Limerick school of art and design, NCAD/National college of art and design , ATU and IADT with very high success rates.
We also provide guidance about preparing digital portfolios for students applying to colleges in the UK and Europe.
Students of this course have been successful in applying for advanced entry to the second year of BA undergraduate and entry to MA postgraduate Art and Design courses.
The course is linked with the MTU/Crawford college BA courses in Contemporary applied art (MT820), Fine Art (MT821) and Creative Digital Media (MT824) through the Cork college’s progression scheme.
