This is an introductory course for those interested in drawing. Observational skills are the core of in every class. Students learn the basic elements of drawing: composition, line and tone, by looking at and understanding how to draw what is in front of them. The second half of the course builds on the skills learned and students are introduced to painting. They get a taste of how to work with acrylics, from composition, paint handling to colour mixing. Digital Photography (Beginners):

This course is aimed at the beginner photographer to better understand your digital camera and create with confidence the types of photographs you’ve always wanted to make. The course is designed to give you guided ‘hands on’ tuition of your camera’s settings and functions through practical demonstration and two field trips. Creative aspects of photography are introduced through slideshows to inspire you to compose better shots and go beyond basic ‘point and shoot’. To get the best out of the course you are encouraged to try out techniques introduced in class for feedback on your own photographs. Digital SLR’s, Bridge and Compact cameras are covered on this course. Over the 8 weeks.

Portrait Photography:

The purpose of this course is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence, using digital image photography, to capture and produce portrait-images within a studio environment. The student will learn various lighting techniques, (both traditional and modern) and will explore the benefits & limitations of working within a photographic studio.

The student will learn how to use a light-meter & work with Studio Flash technology, starting with a single light-source and progressing to multiple light-sources. The student will also learn how to pose a person/model in front of the camera and will also learn how to interact & communicate with that person in order to capture the ideal portrait in a flattering manner.

Camera settings and Flash settings will be taught, as well as the positioning the of lights, reflectors, modifiers, backgrounds, and props to achieve the ideal portrait. This course is not a beginner’s course, and it is assumed that the student will have some working knowledge of their camera to take a reasonable photograph. Ownership of a digital camera (preferably with a hot-shoe attachment, or a built-in flash will be required for this course.

Sculpture for the Visually Impaired:

‘A multi-sensory experience in fine art’

This 8-week course will immerse you in the world of sculpture and enable you to express tactile senses in multiple ways. You will gain new skills and express yourself creatively through your sense of touch. Students will use the medium of clay to produce their sculpture pieces.

During the course you will explore in a sensory way, sculpture from the past and talk about the historical background of sculpture. There will be a trip to the Crawford Gallery to experience sculpture first hand and finally the course participants will put together an exhibition on the college campus.
