INTRODUCTION:

If you can say YES to any one of the following then this may well be the course for you:

  • Have you always had an interest in art and would like to learn more?
  • Do you enjoy making and designing?
  • Do you want to prepare a portfolio for application to third level Art & Design Colleges?
  • Are you creative & want to try different subjects to find out what you enjoy most?
  • Would you like to improve your drawing and painting skills?
  • Would you like to get hands on experience using different materials and crafts like jewellery, sculpture and ceramics?
  • Would you like to explore opportunities in Art, Craft and Design?

If you would like to study art and design in Cork, we have the teachers, coursework and facilities to nurture and grow your talent.

Our Philosophy is simple – explore, express, create!

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Leaving Certificate (LC Established, LCVP or LCA) or equivalent.
  • For mature applicants appropriate experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
  • All applicants are interviewed. A portfolio is not required but applicants will be asked to show five examples of their own creative work.

DURATION:

This is a one-year full-time course.

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION:

Many students use this Art course as a portfolio preparation course. There is one-to-one guidance for those applying to Art & Design Colleges including the MTU/Crawford College, TUS/Limerick school of art and design, NCAD and Colleges in the UK and Europe with very high success rates. There is also guidance with digital portfolio preparation.

  • Projects and Continuous Assessment
  • Skills Demonstration

FEES:

€50 Registration Fee.

  • QQI Art – Level 5 (5M1984).

*Students may have the option of doing either Art Metalwork or Computer Illustrated Graphics or Printmaking.
** Digital photography is offered as an optional extra module (subject to a maximum class size).

EDUCATION PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES:

There is a strong focus on portfolio preparation with one-to-one guidance for those applying to Art & Design Colleges including the MTU/Crawford College of art and design, TUS/Limerick School of Art and Design, National College of Art & Design, SETU, ATU and IADT.

This course is linked with the MTU/Crawford college BA courses in Contemporary applied art (MT820), Fine Art (MT821) and Creative Digital Media (MT824) through the Cork college’s progression scheme.

We also provide guidance about preparing digital portfolios for students applying to colleges in the UK and Europe.

Students who have completed this course can also apply to the following courses in Douglas Street Campus:

  • Fine art (QQI level 6)
  • Illustration (QQI level 6)
